Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
