Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
